What is the FAR course?

First Aid Response (FAR) is a PHECC-recognised first aid course designed to give participants the knowledge and practical skills to respond to a wide range of workplace first aid emergencies.

Training includes:

  • Patient assessment and scene safety
  • CPR and AED use
  • Cardiac emergencies
  • Stroke and heart attack
  • Asthma, diabetes and seizures
  • Injury and bleeding management
  • Shock
  • Care of an unconscious person
  • Burns
  • Hypothermia and hyperthermia
  • Communication and incident management

Successful participants receive PHECC First Aid Response certification valid for 2 years and meets the requirements of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Regulations 2007.

Why it matters for childcare and youth reach teams

Creches, preschools and youth reach programmes work with children and young people every day, often in group settings where an incident needs a fast, confident response. Having staff trained to FAR standard means your team can assess a situation, provide the right immediate care and know when to call emergency services, whatever the setting.

On-site group training

Instead of sending staff to separate public courses, we can bring FAR training directly to your childcare service or Youthreach centre.

On-site training means:

  • Your staff train together in their workplace
  • No travelling to an external training venue
  • Consistent training across your team
  • Dates can be arranged around your service
  • Training takes place in a familiar environment
  • Up to 8 learners can be trained together under our standard group pricing

We currently provide on-site group training across Leinster, Cork City and surrounding areas.

In-person or blended FAR training

Depending on your team’s requirements, training can be delivered in person or through a blended format.

In-person FAR: 18 hours delivered over 3 days.

Blended FAR: 9 hours of online learning followed by 9 hours of in-person practical training.

The blended option can make it easier for childcare and Youthreach services to organise staff training while maintaining cover.

Entry requirements

There are no formal educational requirements. The recommended minimum age is 16. Assessment combines multiple-choice questions with a practical skills assessment, and both are needed for certification.

Group sizes and costs

On-site training suits groups of up to 8 for our standard on-site pricing. If your team is larger, get in touch and we can put together a group quote.

Common questions

Who needs FAR training in a childcare or youth reach setting?
FAR training is suitable for staff who may be expected to provide first aid if a child, young person, colleague or visitor becomes ill or injured.

The number of trained first aiders your organisation requires should be considered as part of your workplace first aid arrangements and risk assessment.

How long does the course take?
In-person is 3 days (18 hours). Blended is 9 hours online plus 9 hours in-person, giving your team more flexibility around their schedule.

How often does certification need renewing?
FAR certification is valid for two years, after which a recertification course is needed.

Can training happen at our own premises?
Yes. On-site training is delivered wherever your team is based, so there’s no need to travel or close for a full day.

Do participants need previous first aid experience?
No. The full FAR course is suitable for participants without previous first aid certification.

If your staff already hold FAR certification and need to renew it, our FAR Refresher (FARR) course may be the more appropriate option.

How First Aid Coaching can help

At First Aid Coaching, we focus on practical, hands-on training that helps participants build confidence as well as first aid knowledge.

For childcare and youthreach teams, that means learning how to assess an emergency, provide appropriate immediate care and respond calmly when something happens in your service.

We’ll also help you understand the course format, group requirements and training options before you book.
