Most emergencies do not happen in a hospital. They happen at work, at home, on a sports pitch or during everyday activities in the community.
In the first few minutes of an emergency, the person nearby may be able to make an important difference by recognising what has happened, calling for help and providing appropriate first aid until emergency medical services arrive.
The PHECC First Aid Essentials – Basic First Aid course (PHECC FAE Basic First Aid) is a practical, one-day training programme designed to give people the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond to common injuries and medical emergencies.
It is suitable for members of the public, employees, community and voluntary organisations, sports clubs, schools and other groups looking for practical basic first aid training.
Common emergencies people may feel unprepared for
Emergencies such as choking, serious bleeding, cardiac arrest, seizures and severe allergic reactions can happen unexpectedly.
Without first aid training, it can be difficult to know what to do first. Practical training helps people recognise an emergency, take appropriate action and provide care while professional medical help is on the way.
What PHECC FAE Basic First Aid covers
PHECC First Aid Essentials – Basic First Aid combines essential first aid knowledge with practical skills and scenario-based training.
Learners cover areas including:
- Patient assessment – assessing the situation, identifying immediate priorities and deciding what action to take
- Cardiac First Response – Community – including CPR, choking management and the safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- Injury management – including bleeding, wounds, burns, fractures, sprains and other common injuries
- Common medical emergencies – including asthma, diabetes-related emergencies, seizures, fainting, anaphylaxis, poisoning and sepsis
- Communication and emergency management – communicating effectively with patients, bystanders and emergency services
Learners take part in practical exercises and receive instructor feedback throughout the course, helping them develop confidence in applying first aid skills in real-life situations.

Is PHECC FAE Basic First Aid the same as FAR?
No.
PHECC First Aid Essentials – Basic First Aid is not a replacement for PHECC First Aid Response (FAR). FAE Basic First Aid is designed to provide practical basic first aid skills for the general population and organisations that want additional first aid knowledge and emergency preparedness. If you are required to act as a designated occupational first aider in the workplace, PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) is the HSA-recognised occupational first aid standard.

Most emergencies do not happen in a hospital. They happen at work, at home, on a sports pitch or in the middle of a community event, in the few minutes before help arrives. Whoever is nearest often has the biggest impact on how things turn out, yet most people have never been shown what to do.
The PHECC First Aid Essentials – Basic First Aid course (PHECC FAE Basic First Aid) is a practical, one-day training programme built for exactly that moment. It gives members of the public, employees, community groups and organisations the skills and confidence to assess an emergency, provide appropriate first aid and support someone until help arrives.
Common emergencies people are unprepared for
Choking, heavy bleeding, cardiac arrest, seizures and severe allergic reactions can happen to anyone, at any age, with no warning. Without basic training, the natural response is to panic or wait for someone else to act. A little practical knowledge changes that completely.
What PHECC FAE Basic First Aid actually covers
PHECC First Aid Essentials – Basic First Aid is not about memorizing theory. It puts people through realistic scenarios so they build real confidence, covering:
- Patient assessment, working out what is wrong and what to do first
- Cardiac First Response, including CPR and safe AED use
- Choking, bleeding, burns and injury management
- Common medical emergencies such as asthma attacks, diabetes-related episodes, seizures
and anaphylaxis
Every learner gets hands-on practice with the equipment and feedback from an instructor, not just a slideshow.
