PHECC Paediatric First Aid: new one-day training for childcare and early years services
First Aid Coaching is now taking bookings for the PHECC First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid course, a practical one-day programme focused specifically on first aid emergencies involving babies and children.
The course provides 6.5 contact hours of practical, in-person training and is particularly relevant to early years educators, pre-school and childcare staff, childminders and others responsible for the care of children.
Training is delivered by First Aid Coaching in conjunction with UFAS, with public courses available for €95 per person and private on-site training for €600 for groups of up to eight learners within our standard delivery area.
What is PHECC First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid?
First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid is a PHECC-accredited first aid course designed around emergencies involving babies and children.
The focused one-day programme includes Cardiac First Response – Community (CFR Community) as a core component and combines essential first aid knowledge with practical, instructor-led training.
With a maximum of eight learners per instructor, participants have time to practise essential skills, work through realistic scenarios and receive individual feedback.
Following successful completion, learners receive the relevant PHECC First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid digital certificate, valid for two years.
Who is the course for?
- The course is designed for people who regularly work with or care for babies and children, including:
- Early years educators
- Pre-school and childcare staff
- Childminders
- School and after-school staff
- Parents and guardians
- Foster carers
- Sports coaches
- Youth group leaders and volunteers
It provides a practical option for individuals as well as organisations that need to arrange paediatric first aid training for a team.
What does Paediatric First Aid training cover?
The course focuses on emergencies that people caring for babies and children may realistically encounter.
Training covers patient assessment, CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding, burns, limb injuries and common childhood medical emergencies, alongside the safe management of an emergency situation.
The emphasis is on practical application. Learners develop the skills to recognise what is happening, take appropriate first aid action and support an injured or suddenly ill baby or child while professional medical assistance is being arranged.
PHECC Paediatric First Aid and Tusla requirements
From September 2026, Tusla’s Early Years Inspectorate expressly includes PHECC First Aid Essentials – Paediatric First Aid among the PHECC-accredited qualifications considered to meet the first aid training requirements for pre-school services under Regulation 25(1). Registered providers must ensure that a person appropriately trained in first aid for children is immediately available while the service is operating and on outings. The number of trained staff required should reflect factors such as the service’s risk assessment, size, staffing arrangements and the needs of children attending.

Practical training for people responsible for children
Knowing first aid in a childcare environment is about more than holding a certificate.
When a baby or child becomes suddenly ill or injured, staff need to be able to recognise the problem, remain calm and take appropriate action. Practical training allows learners to develop and practise those skills before they are needed in a real emergency.
For early years and childcare services in particular, the new PHECC Paediatric First Aid programme provides a focused training option specifically relevant to the care of babies and children.

Private training can be arranged for childcare and early years services, schools and other organisations responsible for children. For locations outside our standard delivery area, reasonable travel expenses will be confirmed before booking.
